US FORCES IN IRAQ AND ISRAELI FORCES FACE A COMMON THREAT: IRANIAN ROCKETS

Officials inside the US State Department and the Pentagon have become increasingly vocal about the growing trend of rocket attacks on US bases in Iraq. The locations of the attacks and the weapons used indicate that Iranian-sponsored militias, and not ISIS, are responsible. This means that US forces in the region now find themselves in the same predicament as the Israeli military, which also has to defend against ongoing, intermittent rocket fire from Iranian-sponsored militias in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Syria. The connection is not lost on the Americans, who have recently considered the Israeli Iron Dome missile defense system as a means of protecting US troops in Iraq.

So far, no casualties have been reported as a result of the rocket fire in Iraq. Whereas the Israelis have often taken a course of direct (albeit undeclared) action against Iran and its proxies, the US has instead sought to use the regular Iraqi security forces as intermediaries with the Iranian-linked militias in Iraq - known collectively as Popular Mobilization Units (PMU's) or "Hashd al-Shabi" - in an attempt to "deconflict." But as Iranian threats on US bases in the region increase, and as the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) takes a more direct role in the Iraqi government in order to quell ongoing street protests, it seems unlikely that deconfliction will occur as long as both US forces and Iranian actors are present in Iraq.

US CONSIDERING TROOP INCREASE AS IRANIAN REGIME CONTINUES PROVOCATIONS ACROSS MIDDLE EAST

Short and medium range Iranian missile batteries, like the one shown here, are believed to have been moved into Iraq last month, as well as exported to Hezbollah inside Syria and Libya, putting them within range of Israeli cities (Credit: ypa.ir)

The United States military is considering the deployment of several thousand more troops to the Middle East after intelligence revealed the alarming movement of Iranian missile batteries into Iraq last month. Many analysts believe that the Tehran regime is taking advantage of unrest across Shi'a Iraq to position missiles that could be used to more easily strike US bases, the Saudi Gulf states, and of course, Israel.

The Pentagon talks became public on the same day that the US State Department announced that it has documented evidence that the Iranian regime has murdered over 1,000 peaceful street protesters in the last month, including one incident caught on tape in which up to 100 fleeing protesters were surrounded and massacred in cold blood by security forces in trucks with automatic weapons.

The movement of Iranian missile batteries into Iraq fits a larger pattern of creeping Iranian aggression across the region. Just last week, a US Navy vessel interdicted an Iranian vessel transporting a "large cache" of sophisticated missile parts to Yemen, where Houthi rebels have been fighting a proxy war against the Saudi Kingdom on Iran's behalf for over five years.

IRAN ANNOUNCES WAR GAMES WITH RUSSIA, CHINA AMIDST BRUTAL CRACKDOWN ON PUBLIC UPRISING

A commander in the Iranian Navy has announced a series of naval war games in cooperation with Russia and China, to begin in the Indian Ocean this month. The joint exercises are intended to further expand in the radical regime's military posture in the Middle East, signaling Russia and China's willingness to defend their interests in Iran in the event of a conflict with Israel, the US or the Gulf states. Iran has previously threatened to use its navy in an operation to shut down the Strait of Hormuz, through which over 30% of the world's oil exports are shipped each day.

The announcement of the Iranian-Russian-Chinese war games came as the Tehran government finds itself embroiled in the worst outbreak of public unrest in the 40 year history of the Islamic Republic, with thousands of demonstrators taking to the streets across the country and a brutal crackdown by regime-aligned militias, resulting in the deaths of at least 180 protesters to date.

In the last 4 hours

A stabbing rampage on London Bridge kills two Britons before the self-proclaimed jihadist was shot and killed by police.

Another stabbing attack in The Hague, Netherlands injures several, the attacker is still at large

An explosive device is found in an abandoned bag in Paris.

Rockets are fired from Gaza into Southern Israel, triggering warning sirens for the 4th time this week and prompting retaliation from the Israeli military.

Israel and Europe are right now facing the same threat of radical jihad. Hamas, al-Qaeda and ISIS are all children and grandchildren of the Muslim Brotherhood, a movement founded in 1923 to reestablish the Islamic Caliphate after its abolition at the end of the Ottoman Empire.

BREAKING: ISRAELI MISSILES STRIKE MULTIPLE IRANIAN, SYRIAN TARGETS INSIDE SYRIA AFTER GOLAN ATTACK

Israeli missile fire over Damascus, Syria, 2019 (via BBC).

Israeli jets and surface-to-air batteries struck multiple targets belonging to the Iranian Quds Force near Damascus, Syria on Wednesday morning, as well as Syrian missile batteries that fired in response. The round of strikes came just hours after several missles were fired at Israeli military installations in the Golan Heights. There are no official reports of damage or casualties at the time.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immeidately discolsed Israel's role in the strikes in a public statement: "I made it clear that whoever harms us - we will harm them. That is what we did tonight in Syria against Iranian Quds Force targets and Syrian military targets, after rockets were fired from its territory towards Israel. We will continue to aggressively guard the security of Israel."

The volley of strikes comes a week after Israel targeted a top Palestinian Islamic Jihad political leader near Damascus in an airstrike last week, which is considered to be the impetus for the rocket attack in the Golan on Tuesday evening. The Iranian Quds Force is a leading patron of the PIJ, providing millions of dollars worth of weapons, training and materiel to the terrorist group in their ongoing war against Isarel from inside the Gaza Strip.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCES CHANGE IN WEST BANK SETTLEMENT POLICY

Since the administration of Jimmy Carter in the late 1970’s, the official diplomatic position of the United States government regarding the Israeli settlements in the West Bank territory has been murkey at best. The administration of Jimmy Carter first crafted policy declarations that labeled all Israeli settlements in the West Bank as being “inconsistent with international law.” President Ronald Reagan then reversed that policy during his administration, at least by proclamation. The Clinton and Bush administrations each deferred the status of settlements to the outcome of peace processes during their respective administrations, only condemning or expressing concern about the construction of new settlements. The Obama Administration followed a similar tactic for most of its term, before regressing back to the Carter Administration’s blanket condemnation of all Israeli West Bank settlements in 2016.

During a US State Department press briefing today, Secretary Mike Pompeo announced that the US policy towards Israeli settlements in the West Bank is now officially shifting once again to align with the position of the Reagan administration in the 1980’s. Once again, the the US government does not consider all Israeli settlements to be inconsistent inconsistent with international law. Secretary Pompeo cited that Israel has a credible court system for processing the legality of each settlement project, and that there is nothing in international law that specifically addresses the issue of Israeli settlements per se. Pompeo also called into question the efficacy of US policy vis-a-vis Israeli settlements, stating that a policy of condemning them had done nothing over four decades to actually advance the peace process, which has started and stalled several times since the Carter Administration.

Palestinian Authority spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudaineh condemned the policy reversal, calling it “illegal” and claiming that the Trump Administration had, ““completely lost all credibility and no longer has any role in the peace process. We hold the US administration fully responsible for the any repercussions of this dangerous position.”

The disputed territory known as the “West Bank”, named for it’s geographical position to the west of the Jordan River, is traditionally known as Judea (Latin for Judah) and Samaria, the ancient Biblical heartland of the Jewish people. There is over 3000 years of extensive and growing archaeological evidence to support Hebrew settlement in the territory. It was eventually partitioned to the Kingdom of Jordan in 1947 by the United Nations and then lost by Jordan after two attempted invasions and successive defeats by the Jewish State in 1948 and 1967. The final status of the territory has not been achieved in the half-century since then, despite repeated Israeli attempts in the 1990’s and 2000’s to grant statehood to the Arab population in the West Bank. The so-called “Two State Solution” has been largely abandoned since 2008, when the most favorable Israeli offer to the Palestinian Authority was rejected. With constitutionally-mandated elections delayed indefinitely in the PA and no change in leadership, successive Israeli governments under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have found no path forward with the peace process, choosing instead to improve relations with Arab nations in the region and to build economic infrastructure within the West Bank.

BREAKING: MISSILE FIRED TOWARD MILITARY INSTALLATION IN GOLAN HEIGHTS

Photo: Deployment of the Iron Dome system (Credit: Raython).

Rocket fire from the Syrian side of the Golan Heights this evening was intercepted by Iron Dome. The presumed target was an IDF installation in the Israeli Golan and not civilian communities. Based on statements from Palestinian Islamic Jihad leaders in Syria, the attack may have been a limited response to an Israeli air strike against the home of one of their political leaders near Damascus last week.

It is yet to be seen whether the IDF will respond to the rocket fire. Both sides in the conflict have sought to deescalate after a brief conflict on the Gaza front last week that saw the launch of 450 rockets into Southern Israel and multiple IAF airstrikes in Gaza that killed two dozen PIJ leaders and fighters.
