US President Trump announced on Twitter Thursday that the State of Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco have agreed to establish full diplomatic relations. The Northwest African nation becomes the fourth Muslim state to join the so-called Abraham Accords in the last four months, after the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan.

The royal government of Moroccan King Muhammad VI released a statement announcing that the normalization effort would move quickly to “resume official contacts... and diplomatic relations with minimal delay." Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu also remarked on the deal Thursday while observing the first night of Chanukah, describing as “joyous” and connecting it to the festival as “another great light of peace." Both leaders mentioned the exchange of ambassadors and commercial air travel as first steps in the accord.

President Trump also announced his recognition of Moroccan sovereignty in the Western Sahara. The arid region in the northwest corner of Africa has been disputed for more than one-hundred years, stretching back to Spanish colonization during the nineteenth century. Western Sahara was annexed by Morocco in 1975 without UN recognition, and most Western nations have not recognized Morocco’s claim to the restive territory until now. It’s unclear whether any other nations will follow Trump’s lead. It has been known for months that the Western Sahara proclamation was Trump’s quid pro quo for peace as he worked to broker the deal between the two nations.

We are thankful for the inclusion of yet another Muslim nation in the Abraham Accords, and pray that this latest announcement will solidify a lasting peace between Israel and Morocco while continuing to build momentum for further Arab-Israeli peace deals across the Middle East and North Africa. We pray that the opening of commerce and travel between Israel and her Arab neighbors will open new doors for Good News.
