A vehicle purportedly transporting a senior Lebanese Hezbollah operative was struck and destroyed in Syria on Wednesday near the Israeli Golan Heights. It was unclear whether the intended targets were killed or possibly escaped with injuries, but photographs published on social media showed the smoldering remains of the vehicle that was struck.

There has been no comment from either Hezbollah or the Israeli military so far regarding the incident, although Israel has previously vowed that Iran and Hezbollah would not be allowed to maintain a presence near the Syrian Frontier with Israel. The strike comes just days after the IDF published a video showing an outdoor meeting between a Syrian Army commander and Hezbollah leadership in the same region. Just last month, the Israeli Army thwarted a developing cross-border sniper plot against Israeli soldiers in the Golan Heights after the assailant was killed in an airstrike before he could begin shooting.

Wednesday’s airstrike against Hezbollah near the “Purple Line” frontier with Syria comes just one day after a tense standoff between Israeli and Lebanese soldiers near the “Blue Line” demarcation between Lebanon and Israel, near the Upper Galilee community of Misgav Am. Photos published on social media show squads of soldiers from both nations facing off in formation across from one another, while a contingent of UNIFL troops stands in between.

The “Blue Line” was established as an armistice line between Israel and Lebanon after the IDF withdrew from Southern Lebanon in 2000. Although it serves as a de-facto border between the two countries, is not a border codified by treaty at this time. Similarly, the “Purple Line” is the line of demarcation between Israel and Syria, established after the Six-Day War between Syria and Israel in 1967. A third demarcation known as the “Green Line” runs along the armistice lines dividing Israel proper from the Palestinian territories.

We ask our global partners to join us in prayer as we continue to intercede for all of the people of Israel and the surrounding nations during this unstable times of military tension, economic downturn and pandemic in the Middle East, especially as bad actors attempt to exploit the COVID-19 crisis by advancing their violent, antisemitic agendas.
